Dallas Cowboys: Five outsider misconceptions of the franchise
By Reid Hanson
Cowboys fans are all homers
When knowledge of your Cowboys fandom become known, outsiders have a tendency to smirk their condescending smirk. And roll their cold dead eyes. For they know you are a fair-weather fan. They know your team stinks. And they know you’re nothing but a “homer” who will die defending every dumb move of this Dallas Cowboys franchise.
But just like the fair weather assumption, they are dead wrong about Cowboys fans being homers. To say Cowboys Nation can be a critical bunch is a massive understatement. We’re an ornery folk. We critique just about everything.
Cowboys fans love their team but don’t get that confused with blind loyalty. We’ll yell at our favorite player or coach if the situation warrants it.
Half of us hated Deion Sanders. Half of us hated Tony Romo. Half hate Dak Prescott. Half of us hate Jerry Jones. Heck, half of us even ran Emmitt frickin Smith outta town so we could get Troy Hambrick more carries!
Cowboys fans love their team but don’t get that confused with blind loyalty. We’ll yell at our favorite player or coach if the situation warrants it. We buy our merchandise loyally every year – even after Dave Campo takes us on three consecutive 5-11 seasons. But that doesn’t mean we give them a pass.
Cowboys fans are loyal and they are critical. They are not homers.
We may seem like homers to so many outsiders but most of that stems from misconceptions like these. I’ve always been critical of Tony Romo, yet, somehow I always found myself defending him when speaking to outsiders. They always wanted to point his late game collapses and I felt obliged to point out his late game heroics
All of which summarized here, “Tony Romo is both clutch and a choker”
All of this, I suppose, provides a nice bridge to the next misconception
