Dallas Stars – C+

Dallas has struggled in the opening days of free agency, missing out on elite forward John Tavares, and possibly pulling the short end of the stick on striking a deal with the Senators to trade for Erik Karlsson.

They did manage to sign goalie Anton Khudobin to a two-year deal. He will back up Ben Bishop, and probably play about 25-35 games if needed for the Stars. The Stars also brought back right winger Valeri Nichushkin from Russia, after he was there for two seasons. Additionally, LW Blake Comeau will spend the next three years in Dallas and add depth to their roster. They also signed hardened blueliner Roman Polak for one season.

Dallas signed many guys who will fill out their AHL roster, including D Joel Hanley (1 yr), RW Erik Condra (1 yr), LW Michael Mersch  (2 yrs), C Joel L’Esperance (2 yrs), and G Colton Point (3 yr) to contracts. They also extended forwards Remi Elie and Jason Dickinson for one season each.

Dallas didn’t do anything fantastic, but Jim Nill has a reputation for pulling-off some unusual and unexpected deals. As for now, they haven’t done anything fantastic.

Remaining cap space: $10,670,001
