San Antonio Spurs

San Antonio has made headline news in the NBA due to trades, and signings, and arguably has made more transactions than other Southwest division teams.

Additions/Re-Signings:

  • Rudy Gay, SF

The Spurs did resign small forward Rudy Gay on a one-year, $10 million dollar contract. Gay declined an $8.8 million dollar player option in June to become an unrestricted free agent.

Last season, Gay’s first in San Antonio, he averaged 11.5 points, 5.1 rebounds, and 1.3 assists per game.

Gay first started his NBA career with the Memphis Grizzlies. He played for them from 2006 to the 2012-13 season, where he was traded to the Toronto Raptors. He was then traded to Sacramento and played with the Kings up until the end of the 2016-17 season.

  • Davis Bertans, C

Davis Bertans, a center from Latvia, signed with the Spurs on a two-year deal worth $14.5 million.

While playing in 77 games for the Spurs last season, Bertans averaged 5.9 points, 2.0 rebounds, and 1.0 assist in 14.1 minutes per game.

Bertans was drafted 42nd overall by the Indiana Pacers in the 2011 NBA draft. He has played for the Spurs for the past two seasons.

  • Bryn Forbes, SG

The Spurs re-signed shooting guard Bryn Forbes on a two-year deal.

Forbes played in 80 games for San Antonio last season, a 44 game increase from his 36 games played in the 2016-17 season. In those 80 games, he averaged 6.9 points, 1.4 rebounds, and shot 39% from three-point range.

The undrafted 25-year-old will start his 3rd season in the NBA with the Spurs this year.

  • Jakob Poeltl, C

Jakob Poeltl was traded to San Antonio along with DeMar DeRozan from the Toronto Raptors in free agency,

Poeltl, who is from Austria, was drafted 9th overall by Toronto in the 2016 NBA draft. In two seasons with the Raptors, Poeltl has averaged 5.4 points and 4.1 rebounds per game.

  • DeMar DeRozan, SG

The Spurs biggest addition was DeMar DeRozan, who they acquired in a trade. Although DeRozan was unhappy about the trade and wanted a “better exit.” DeRozan still has 3 years and $83 million dollars left on his contract.

Last season for Toronto, DeRozan averaged 23.0 points, 5.2 assists, and 3.9 rebounds per game. He averaged 33.9 minutes per game and recorded a field goal percentage of 45.6 percent.

DeRozan will most certainly help the Spurs fill in the gaping hole that Kawi Leonard left in San Antonio.

  • Dante Cunningham, SF

The Spurs also signed small forward Dante Cunningham to a one-year deal worth just under $2.5 million.

Cunningham, who is 31, averaged 5.7 points, 4.1 rebounds with the Brooklyn Nets last season.

Since then, he has played with the Portland Trail Blazers, Charlotte Hornets, Memphis Grizzlies, Minnesota Timberwolves, and New Orleans Pelicans.

  • Marco Belinelli, SF/SG

The Spurs signed Marco Belinelli to a 2-year, $12 million dollar deal. Belinelli played with San Antonio from 2013 to 2015. He won the NBA championship with the Spurs in the 2014 season.

Last season, the Italian played with the Atlanta Hawks and the Philadelphia 76ers for 52 and 28 games, respectively. He averaged 12.1 points per game in a total of 80 games played.

Losses:

  • SF Kawhi Leonard – Toronto Raptors (trade)
  • SF Danny Green – Toronto Raptors (trade)
  • PG Tony Parker – Charlotte Hornets – Two-years, $10 million
  • C Joffrey Lauvergne – Fenerbahce (Turkey) – Two-years
