The Randy Gregory hype train is in full effect. This former 60th overall pick was once regarded as a top-10 talent. But as we know, drug issues caused his draft weekend freefall and drug issues have subsequently robbed him of over half of his professional career thus far.

Boom

It’s undeniable Randy Gregory has enormous talent. Even after taking roughly two years off, Gregory has been (not so quietly) running drills in the background. His athleticism and natural ability is jaw-dropping.

As Randy works his way back into game shape, the Dallas Cowboys will work him back into the rotation. He’s a perfect fit for right defensive and may ultimately push veteran Tyrone Crawford for the lion’s share of snaps this season.

Randy doesn’t just have double-digit sack potential, he has the potential to get one per game. Just looking at his lean on the edge, his flexibility, his long arms, and his explosion and he’s one of the most naturally gifted pass-rushers in the entire NFL.

Bust

Potential gets you jack squat on its own in this league. This game is too darn hard to just ride natural talent. You need heath, work ethic, personal drive, and competitiveness to make it (you need good standing in the league as well). These are things that will need constant attention from Gregory if he wants to realize his sky-high potential.

Some will point to his stats (or lack thereof) to delegitimize Randy’s talent. These are people who probably haven’t seen Randy practice or play. Ignore those people. What we can’t ignore is what Randy still needs to do in order to make it. It’s a long and hard list.

Randy Gregory could be the best pass-rusher in the NFL or he could be left without a job completely. That’s a pretty significant spread.
