The Dallas Cowboys will be leaning heavily on rookie wide receiver Michael Gallup. With injuries to several wide receivers Gallup is poised to start.

The Dallas Cowboys were dealt a blow when rookie wide receiver Cedrick Wilson was placed on injured reserve. This puts the team in a strange position as the wide receiver position is currently wide open. Wilson was expected to play a minor role in the passing game this season and with him gone, coaches will likely look towards another rookie to have a major impact.

Michael Gallup is the Dallas Cowboys ace in the hole. Sure everyone believed that Dallas Goedert was the Cowboys primary receiving target in the early rounds of the 2018 NFL Draft.

That was not the case as the sure-handed Gallup caught the Cowboys eye long before any other receiver could. Gallup on paper is a top three prospect at wide receiver and has shown flashes of greatness during his short time playing with Dak Prescott and the Dallas offense. The Colorado State rookie has also been working with Prescott throughout the offseason and so far his teammates are impressed with his work ethic.

More from Dallas Cowboys

In college, he totaled over 2,600 receiving yards and 21 touchdowns in only two seasons, so the Cowboys are hoping that was just the beginning of something great. Now Gallup did have a tough day on Sunday as he recorded a couple of drops and busted routes, the young wide receiver took it as a learning experience. This only showed the maturity and thought that Gallup possesses every time he is on the field.

Gallup’s aggressive style will be his calling card in the pros as he plays bigger than he is listed (6’1) and goes after the football. Sometimes that aggressiveness can lead to timing issues however with enough practice Prescott and Gallup should be able to iron out the wrinkles.

Gallup’s status was always a bit brighter than some of his rookie counterparts due to the position he plays, but injuries to both Noah Brown and Cedrick Wilson only increased the amount of interest in the rookie. There is likely no better chance for Gallup to make an impact and an impression earlier on in his young NFL career than with the Dallas Cowboys.

Gallup will be given every opportunity to go out onto the field and earn extra snaps. It is not out of the realm of possibility that he will end up starting at any of the three receiver positions.

Cole Beasley is likely a lock to start and so is Allen Hurns, however, both of those players are quite versatile and could play in the slot. With Wilson and Brown out there is not a whole lot of competition facing Gallup in terms of getting reps. He could easily separate himself from the pack and become a big factor in this offense.

The Dallas Cowboys could have the most versatile group of wide receivers in the NFL but only time will tell if that versatility leads to production.
