The Dallas Cowboys have some pretty talented defensive backs and quite possibly one of the best defensive backs coaches in the NFL, Kris Richard. That does not mean that this unit does not have it’s fair share of problems.

The main issue facing the secondary is the safety position. Xavier Woods is by far the best starter the Cowboys have at the position but beyond him and Jeff Heath, the team should struggle there.

With Heath having a preseason injury already and a lack of depth at the position as a whole I would not be surprised if a free agent or Earl Thomas took over one of the starting roles at some point. The Dallas Cowboys are not necessarily desperate for safety help but the position is not a strength by any means.

At cornerback Duke Thomas will likely win the final job at the position as he was the only player who was not a liability in coverage with the third team. Chidobe Awuzie, Jourdan Lewis, and Byron Jones should be this years crop of starters. Anthony Brown dominated during training camp but struggled mightily against the 49ers. Expect him to be placed on the trade block if his struggles continue.
