Mavericks fans are sure to face many difficulties this season supporting the team, but this one thing may be the most difficult…

Fans of the Dallas Mavericks have gotten used to tempered  expectations as of late. Whether it’s blowing up a championship roster, repeatedly striking out on top-shelf free agents, or the ceaseless rebuilding process – things have been tough.

But this season is different. The Mavs have youth on their roster and the needle finally appears to be pointed up. As such, the usual difficulties for MFFL aren’t present (praise be!). But that doesn’t mean this season will be without challenges.

Even with the addition of Luca Doncic and DeAndre Jordan, the Mavericks are going to struggle making the playoffs. And if they do, they’ll likely face one of the top three seeds in an extremely top-heavy Western Conference.

But let’s be honest, if the Mavs make it into the playoffs and are blessed enough to be swept in the first round, we’d probably thank our lucky stars. For as meek as that “dream scenario” sounds, it’s still far from a likelihood. Which leads us to what the biggest challenge for Mavs fans will be: patience

We’ve managed expectations before so that’s nothing new. But patience will be essential if fans want to enjoy this season. DeAndre Jordan will be expected to play a big part. Playing on a one-year deal this is essentially a try out for both him and the Mavericks. We expect he’ll fit wonderfully with Dennis Smith Jr and J.J. Barea on the pick-and-roll, but we just don’t know for sure. Patience will be needed as the chemistry develops.

More from Dallas Mavericks

Dennis Smith Jr. is expected to make a significant leap in his development but once again, we really don’t know until we see it. Additionally, with so many talented guards on the roster, Rick Carlisle won’t need to force-feed the opportunities to DSJ. He’s going to have earn it and that may require patience from Mavericks fans as well.

Luca Doncic joins the team as the most unknown of them all. Touted as the best player in the draft and a generational talent, Doncic will be expected to at least flash greatness or else Mavs fans are going to feel awfully disappointed.

Once again – patience.

To make matters worse, the Mavs are sending their top pick next season to the Hawks, meaning there is absolutely no benefit and no silver lining to missing the playoffs this coming season. The Mavs went from full-on rebuilding to win-now mode seemingly overnight.

This season is going to be a fun one to watch for Mavericks fans but patience will be required. With no first round pick next summer, that’s much easier said than done.
