After another abysmal offensive performance by the Dallas Cowboys, Jerry Jones again says he has confidence in the coaching staff, but there is a lot he can’t say.

Jerry Jones appeared on 105.3 and restated his faith in the Dallas Cowboys coaching staff. While fans, analysts, and even those who work at The Star are all questioning if Jason Garrett should be fired, the real story is one very few will actually know. While nearly everyone is waiting for Jerry Jones to say Jason Garrett and Scott Linehan are being fired, there is a lot of reasons we may not hear it like we want to.

More from Dallas Cowboys

Before I go too much further, I would like to explain my background in what is to follow. I have a degree in Advertising with a minor in Anthropology. I spent a good part of my life writing propaganda (read public relations, just a military version, and much darker at times), working in marketing and public relations, and even spent time as an anthropologist studying cultures. Because of all this, I understand how a message is created, relayed, and expressed in a very unique way.

Now, moving on from that, I am sure many people expected to wake up this morning with a huge bullseye on Jason Garrett and Scott Linehan. When Jerry talked on the radio and stated his support for them, I could almost hear the collective scream around DFW. What else is Jerry supposed to say? Until he actually fires Jason Garrett, there is no reason for him to express anything else.

The second Jerry says publicly that he doesn’t support Garrett and Linehan, the locker room is completely lost. If players know the owner doesn’t support the coach, the coach becomes a “lame duck,” and there will no longer be control at all. Jerry knows that the way to make a bad situation worse is to say it for all to hear.

Mathematically, the Cowboys still have a shot at winning the NFC East. The division is looking really bad and currently, it looks like an 8-8 record could win it. So, even with all of the struggles the Cowboys are having, the second Jerry says Jason is gone, so then too, is the season. Jerry certainly doesn’t want that, when no matter how small of a chance there is, there is in fact a chance.

I personally don’t think if the Cowboys somehow go 8-8 and get into the playoffs that Jason should be here next season. However, I don’t run the team, Stephen and Jerry will make that call, and we don’t have to like it (if they keep or fire them). Until then, Jason is the coach and Jerry will publicly support him. It’s the right move for public relations and internal relations.

What we can assume is that behind the closed doors in Frisco, there are much more serious conversations and much more truth. I would find it hard to believe the Jones family is happy with the team right now.

Jerry did question Jason’s decision to punt on a 4th and 1, on overtime, in the Texans side of the field. So it would be safe to think that Jerry certainly had the conversation of being unhappy with the coach, or at the very least the decisions he has made.

Next. Dallas Cowboys: Cowboys need to bring back Dez. dark

We won’t know what Jones is really thinking until he actually makes a move. It won’t be until Garrett and Linehan are fired or resigned that we will all know how Jerry really feels. From a business standpoint, it makes sense. Even if we don’t like it.
