The Dallas Cowboys could be in the market for some extra firepower in the secondary. Patrick Peterson is rumored to be available, should Dallas pursue him?

The Dallas Cowboys are coming off of their biggest win of the season against the Jacksonville Jaguars. This NFL season seems to be flying right by as we will now look towards Week Seven of the regular season. This also means we are only two weeks away from the NFL trade deadline. With that in mind, there are several players on the Cowboys radar, however, there is one Pro Bowler who stands out.

The Arizona Cardinals are apparently shopping around their best defensive player in Patrick Peterson. The cornerback has been legendary over the course of his career but as he enters the twilight of his productive years he must want to win a Super Bowl trophy at some point.

The Cardinals are aware of their basement status in the NFC West it is just a fact at this point. Sam Bradford was a dreadful choice and Josh Rosen still needs time to develop, time that Peterson does not have.

It has been rumored that the Cardinals will take draft picks in exchange for Peterson, which poses the question, should the Dallas Cowboys pursue the Pro Bowl cornerback? It is not an immediate need as Byron Jones has been one of the NFL’s best cornerbacks this season and the secondary overall has been pretty productive.

There was also a rumor that the Dallas Cowboys could be looking to trade Jourdan Lewis, and if that is the case they will likely have little interest in any major pursuit of another cornerback. But the addition of Peterson would be significant to this defense, in ways that are very similar to adding a veteran like say, Earl Thomas.

Before Thomas went down with a season-ending injury, he was right in the middle of every trade talk that involved the Dallas Cowboys. Now the secondary has had some time to adjust and realistically it continues to be one of the stronger aspects of this roster. Does that mean it cannot get better?

Of course not, the Cowboys will need to make a decision on Byron Jones in the near future. His play this season has definitely upped his stock value and it will be important for the Cowboys to lock him down long-term. Peterson could be added not only as a buffer for any issues that may arise but as the perfect compliment to Jones’s defensive specialties.

They would immediately be one of the best cornerback tandems currently in the NFL. This also gives both Chidobe Awuzie and Jourdan Lewis time to develop and not be thrust into awkward and dangerous situations (coverage wise). Jones will be apart of the Dallas Cowboys at least until 2020 since the team picked up his fifth-year option.

Peterson has two years left on his contract, would become a free agent in 2021 and turns 30 in 2020. So what exactly would the Cardinals want for Peterson? Well, it is likely they will at least seek a second round pick, now for a player of Peterson’s caliber, a second-round pick makes sense.

I believe the Cardinals will have to also take into consideration that his play, like most aging NFL vets, may not lead to an increase in production, so settling for a third-round pick may be a distinct possibility.

The Dallas Cowboys could also pair a second or third round pick with a receiver, Terrance Williams and Deonte Thompson immediately come to mind. The Cardinals need picks for their rebuild and the Dallas Cowboys need elite level players in the secondary.

With an average salary of around $11 million per season, landing Peterson would be a bargain compared to some of the other elite talents around the NFL.
