Winning against the Jaguars shouldn’t save Jason Garrett from being fired as the head coach of the Dallas Cowboys, but it might.

There is a rumor out there in the world of the Dallas Cowboys that has a lot of fans (I would venture to say most of them) worried.

Jeff Sullivan said, “There could be an extension soon,” in reference to Jason Garrett as the head coach. The Jacksonville game could be a major reason it could actually happen.

There are some fans left out there who believe Jason Garrett is one of the best coaches in the NFL. They claim that a Coach of the Year award in 2016 and a record a few games above .500 shows that he is a really good coach. But those fans are few and far between, the majority wants Jason Garrett shown the door, unless he wins a Super Bowl this year.

A week after what most people consider a classic Jason Garrett gaff in punting on a 4th and 1, in overtime, on the opponents side of the field, the Cowboys destroyed the Jacksonville Jaguars. Historically, Garrett has had games like this throughout the season, that Jerry Jones believes Garrett is the right coach. There is always a reason why these types of games can’t be consistent throughout a season and in the playoffs.

One year it is a bad call from the refs. Another year it is injuries at certain positions. The next year it is off field distractions. Yet, through it all Jerry says that Garrett is learning and growing and that next year is the year. The problem is, one playoff win during his tenure does not give a lot of hope to many outside of Jerry.

However, there is now a rumor that Garrett will get another extension. If this year doesn’t end well, then it will be Linehan, or Travis Fredrick’s injury, or maybe even all of the roster changes that didn’t come together until late in the season. There will be something, anything, and Garrett will be given new life.

Garrett’s contract doesn’t run out until 2019. So an extension right now doesn’t make sense, unless Jerry Jones wants to quiet the noise for a little bit. As this season has gone so far, signing him now or soon may not be the best for distraction. It doesn’t mean Jerry won’t extend Garrett now, but the smart move would be to wait at least until the end of the season.

More from Dallas Cowboys

Winning against Jacksonville doesn’t and shouldn’t save Jason Garrett. For his entire tenure we have heard, “trust the process”, “Jason is an outstanding coach who is learning”, “We like what Jason brings”, and “Coach Garrett does things the right way”. Of course, one playoff win doesn’t quiet the fans. The process hasn’t paid off and fans are quickly becoming tired of the “process” and only a championship will shut down the fire Garrett talk.

We can only sit, wait, and watch while Jerry decides if he will in fact extend Garrett. Maybe the Jacksonville game will go a long way to Jerry. Maybe, it is the start to a better season, and that will save Garrett. Regardless how fans feel about Garrett, Jerry will do what he wants, and we all live with it, like it or not.

The Jacksonville game shouldn’t absolve Garrett of a disappointing start to 2018. It shouldn’t absolve him of a mediocre tenure as head coach. It also shouldn’t save Garrett from the repeated mistakes in clock management, questionable in-game decisions, bland playcalling, and stubborn management of scheme and players. However, the Jacksonville game may just do all of that.
