Dallas Cowboys: Should the Cowboys trade for Golden Tate?
By Carl Daley
The Dallas Cowboys have begun to make some moves now that the trade deadline is almost here. Should the Cowboys trade for Golden Tate?
I know, I know it has been a full week since the Dallas Cowboys made their first blockbuster trade of the regular season, but should it be their last? The Detroit Lions have made it pretty clear they are shopping around Golden Tate, a player who has been their top wide receiver for the past few seasons.
I do not know the logic behind this but I am guessing it has something to do with his age (30). Other than that, he has been one of the more productive receivers of the last couple of years so realistically he could be very productive for any team willing to acquire him.
Let’s take a look at why the Dallas Cowboys should make a deal for Tate.
The main issue here is why not, he costs a mid-round pick (4, 5, 6) and has been essential to one of the heaviest pass-oriented offenses in the NFL. Tate has 44 receptions, recorded 517 receiving yards, is averaging 11.8 yards per reception, and has found the end zone three times, all in 2018.

There has not been one Cowboys receiver who has come even close to those numbers, which is saying a lot in itself. The roster is basically devoid of consistent playmakers at the position, until the arrival of Amari Cooper.
But he is not a sure thing either, so why put all of the pressure on him? Why not, acquire Tate and effectively spread the ball around. The addition of Tate would suddenly make the Dallas Cowboys wide receiving corps pretty formidable and more importantly increasingly efficient at making plays.
What is really puzzling about this is why do they only want a mid-round pick? The Cowboys felt as if they did not need their first round pick so what is the difference if they trade a fourth or fifth for Tate? If the front office stays aggressive, there is no telling what this team could accomplish and adding Tate and Cooper mid-season would be a huge upgrade for this wide receiving corps.
You would have two receivers who are actually dangerous along with Cole Beasley and rookie Michael Gallup. If the Dallas Cowboys want what is best for Ezekiel Elliott then acquiring Tate for a mid-round pick is a no-brainer.
He would require coverage on every play and is used to a heavy workload. He would become a free agent at the end of the season but if Dallas is going for control of the division Tate would be a solid complement to Cooper.
The Dallas Cowboys will also see half of the wide receivers hit free agency in 2019 and gaining a veteran like Tate could help stabilize the receiver room.
Realistically there is not a lot to lose by adding Tate this late in the season, he will be playing for a new contract so I am certain he would appreciate the added spotlight that comes with playing in Big D.
