The Dallas Mavericks will likely be major players during free agency following the 2018 season. What is their plan to help build a playoff contender?

The Dallas Mavericks season just began and they are already looking like prime contenders to land a superstar in free agency. This organization is beginning to turn around and this season should tell potential free agents, Dallas is looking to go shopping. One major star could be the glue that cements this franchise as a playoff contender.

So far the 2019 free agent class is looking fairly exciting as some top tier players could hit the market. For the Dallas Mavericks, several players on their roster will see their contracts end, but the real question will become should they be re-signed?

At the end of the 2018 season center DeAndre Jordan, shooting guard Seth Curry, center Nerlens Noel, point guards Devin Harris and Yogi Ferrell, and legendary Maverick, Dirk Nowitzki will see their contracts end.

This should mark a significant change for the Dallas Mavericks as it is quite possible most of these players could be on their way out the door. Dirk is likely to retire as he has become basically a depth player at this point in his career. Seth Curry has not really panned out the way the Dallas Mavericks had envisioned.

Jordan is a bit of a wildcard in my book as he does do a lot of work on the glass, however, there could be better options available on the open market. The whole point of the Mavericks next free agency period is to get key players to help build this young roster into a competitive playoff contender. Dennis Smith Jr and Luka Doncic will be the main stars for this franchise for years to come, however, a veteran two-way player could not hurt their growth.

With both players falling into starting roles finding talented veterans to back them up and teach them a few things would be helpful as this team continues to look for an identity. If Patrick Beverley does not re-sign with the Houston Rockets he could be a huge get for this basketball team.

He is one of the best defenders in the league and a solid player to help DSJ learn about fundamentals on both sides of the ball. The two superstar options at point guard will likely be Isaiah Thomas and Kemba Walker. Both players are about around 30 years old and still can be very productive.

Adding Walker would be huge but may not make as much sense as landing a quality role player at the position. Derrick Rose could also be an option but it is hard to imagine that he would stay healthy for a full season. At power forward, there is a certain unicorn who could be seeking greener pastures.

Kristaps Porzingis will also see his contract expire and following such a severe knee injury it has been speculated that neither side has really decided what path to take. If Porzingis does become a free agent the Mavericks would be a fantastic place for him even with Luka Doncic in the lineup.

Both players are so versatile they can easily play a different role and see similar production. A more likely scenario would be that the Dallas Mavericks go after a player like Kenneth Faried who has some miles on him but still is one of the more productive players at the position.

The center position should dominate the conversation for the Dallas Mavericks during the offseason as DeAndre Jordan could become a free agent and be lured away from Dallas. This may or may not be so terrible as there are should be a number of quality free agents on the open market.

Nikola Vucevic and DeMarcus Cousins could be the top options available and realistically the Mavericks landing Cousins would be huge. Boogie did sign a one year deal with the Golden State Warriors so he could be looking to win a title and cash out during free agency. Landing Cousins should be priority number one this offseason.

If the Dallas Mavericks want to become a legit playoff contender in the west then they need to start acquiring stars and effectively utilizing every bit of their salary cap.
