Round 2 – Irv Smith Jr. – Tight End – Alabama

It isn’t really a secret that one of the biggest issues on the Dallas Cowboys for 2018 has been the tight end position. It could be argued that it has been safety, but with the recent dominance of the defense, we will give the nod to tight end. Irv Smith Jr. is currently seen as a second round pick, although with a playoff run, he could raise his stock. For now we will keep him as a second round pick. Smith is the type of tight end the Cowboys could use, although there might be an argument Kaden Smith is the better receiver, I would argue Smith Jr., is further ahead in blocking, and not far behind as a receiver.

Irv Smith Jr., has the speed to threaten the seam, something the Cowboys have been lacking in 2018. Sure, Noah Brown has stepped up, but the reality is the Cowboys do need an upgrade at the tight end position, regardless of Brown. Irv runs pretty good routes, has good hands, and uses his hands well in blocking. He will need to work on his feet in blocking, but he would instantly be one of the best blocking tight ends on the roster, day one.

If the Cowboys decide not to look in free agency for a tight end, it would not surprise me if they look for one early in the draft. Currently it might be the biggest need on the roster, as long as everyone returns healthy next year. This would add a weapon on a much maligned offense and still help an elite run game.
