Dallas Stars prospect and Niagara IceDogs forward Jason Robertson has had a fantastic year of hockey, both in the Ontario Hockey League (OHL) and most recently at the World Juniors in Vancouver, Canada.

Dallas Stars’ prospect Jason Robertson was a steal in the 2017 NHL Entry Draft—he was ranked #14 by NHL Central Scouting, #27 by Future Considerations, #30 by TSN/McKenzie, and #31 by hockeyprospect.com—but he was available in the second round, and the Stars selected him with the 39th overall pick in the draft.

"“I’d say it’s really, honestly it was really anxious,” Robertson said after he was drafted by Dallas. “Every team has a pick and to see where you’re going to go and to be drafted to Dallas is really, really special. I know Dallas is a really exciting city so I’m glad to be a part of it.”"

Before his career with the Stars organization, though, he returned to the OHL’s Kingston Frontenacs for his fourth and final season.

He was coming off a dominant 2017-18 season with Kingston, finishing in seventh in points with 87 and sixth in goals with 41 in 68 games.

Robertson started the 2018-19 season on a very strong note. He put up 23 goals and 15 assists in the first 24 games in the season. At the time, he was second in the league in goals and led the league in powerplay goals with nine.

Although Robertson had found success early on in the season, Kingston had not. The Frontenacs had a 6-16-1 record after the first 23 contests, landing themselves at last place in their conference.

It was then that Frontenacs decided to shake up their roster. They traded Robertson and defenseman Jacob Paquette to Niagara in exchange for defenseman Billy Constantinou, forward Ian Martin, and 11 OHL draft picks.

"“It’s pretty emotional,” Robertson told the Whig Standard’s Ian MacAlpine following the trade. “I spent the past three and a half years of my life in Kingston and it’s tough to leave, but at the same time I understand it’s junior hockey and our team wasn’t doing so well this year so the general manager and coach thought it would be better to stock up for the next couple of years.”"

Robertson has only played in eight games for Niagara, but he has continued to shine. He’s already recorded 22 points (8 G, 14 A) for the IceDogs, including

He is fourth in the OHL in points with a total of 60 on the season and he’s also ranked fourth in goals with 31.

Robertson also dominates on special teams, as he is first in the league in power play goals with 13 and sixth in power play assists with 15.

The California native took a break from the OHL to compete for the United States at the World Junior Championship. While at the World Juniors, Robertson recorded seven points (1 G, 7 A) in seven games for the United States.

His only tally was the opening goal in the United States’ 4-1 win against Finland in the final game of the preliminary round of the tournament.

The United States faced Finland again in the gold medal match, where the Fins redeemed themselves by defeating the United States 3-2.

The Niagara IceDogs are in second place in the OHL’s Eastern Conference with 50 points, behind the Ottawa 67’s. Robertson leads the team in points and in goals.

Jason Robertson is certainly a bright spot in the prospect pool in the Dallas Stars organization, and it won’t be long until you see him in a Victory Green sweater.
