Round 7 – Alex Barnes – Running Back – Kansas State
Barnes had a tremendous junior year and he declared for the draft because of it. What might hold him back is this is a fairly deep running back class and he is not good in pass protection. He will sometimes hesitate in the backfield, but shows when he makes a decision he has the athletic ability to gain yards.
His stiff arm is strong and once he is rolling he is not an easy tackle. When it gets in tight he struggles sometimes to stay behind his pads and will be brought down quicker. He doesn’t really get those grind it out 2-3 yard plays often enough. But can and will punish a defense if they miss him with the ability to break off a long run. But doesn’t really have home-run speed.
The need for depth at running back will probably have the Cowboys looking for someone in the late rounds. Barnes is a good runner in the style of offense the Cowboys run, so should be fine for depth. He can find a role on special teams and stick around. If not Barnes, there are a few other running backs hanging around at this point in the 7th round.
