Dallas Cowboys: Who are their free agents and who will they re-sign?
By Reid Hanson
David Irving
Defensive Tackle
Where to begin with David Irving? I’ve written articles singing Irving’s praises only to be disappointed time and time again. One of the best natural talent’s I’ve ever seen runs the very real risk of never playing football again – and it’s all because of off the field issues (although these are all very real off the field issues not to be taken lightly).
News broke last weekend David Irving has missed several drug tests and now faces league discipline as a result.
With 10 sacks in the past 12 games played, David Irving is one of the most disruptive players in the entire NFL. At 6’7” 290lbs he’s a physically imposing presence inside or outside. Because of this, he’ll probably get offers elsewhere.
In Dallas, however, the clock is about to strike midnight on his career with the Cowboys. It’s very doubtful he’ll be offered a chance to return after only playing 1 game of his $2,914,000 prove-it season. Don’t get me wrong, I still like the kid and at age 25 he still has time to carve out a career, I just don’t think the Cowboys have the patience for it anymore.
For the record, I’d be fine offering him a one-year minimum deal even with a potential one-year suspension looming (contract wouldn’t begin until after the suspension). But that’s admitting I only know a fraction of what the Dallas Cowboys front office knows, as such I refrain from banging the table for #95.
Chances of re-signing: <10%
