Stars’ General Manager Jim Nill and the Dallas Stars sent forward Devin Shore to the Anaheim Ducks in exchange for forward Andrew Cogliano.

In a surprising move on Monday morning, the Dallas Stars traded center Devin Shore to the struggling Anaheim Ducks in exchange for winger Andrew Cogliano.

"“In acquiring Andrew, we are able to add a conscientious player who brings a veteran-presence to our room. His explosive speed, 200-foot game and iron-man mentality will help our team both on and off the ice.” Jim Nill told The Athletic‘s Sean Shapiro in a press release on Monday."

Cogliano has 11 points (three goals, eight assists) and 14 penalty minutes in 46 games this season for Anaheim. At 31 years old, he has played 912 games in his career, totaling 379 points (159 G, 220 A) with the Edmonton Oilers and Anaheim Ducks since he joined the NHL in 2007. He was Edmonton’s first round (25th overall) selection in the 2005 NHL Entry Draft along big name NHLers including Sidney Crosby, Bobby Ryan, Anze Kopitar, Carey Price, T.J. Oshie, James Neal, and others.

With the exception of the league’s lockout during the 2012-13 season, Cogliano is a workhorse, having played in at least 80 games in every season since he has been in the NHL. The highest point total in his career was his rookie season, 2007-08, where he posted 45 points (18 G, 27 A) in 82 games with the Oilers.

Like the Ducks, Cogliano hasn’t necessarily been a firepower scoring source this season but can add some much-needed help to the Stars’ back nine forward lines, which have been struggling to put goals in the net since the start of the new year.

The Toronto native also adds speed to the Stars’ lineup, in hopes that the offense will have a versatile aspect to its goal production.

"“We’re going to play faster and it creates more opportunities,” Nill told Dallas Morning News writer Matthew DeFranks. “When you get in on pucks, I think it’s going to help our forecheck. In the end, you’re playing in two zones: your zone or the other team’s zone. He enhances that.”"

Cogliano, a 12-year veteran in the NHL, has two years left on his contract with a $3.25 million dollar average annual value (AAV). He has scored three points (one goal, two assists) and a +2 plus/minus in his last three games with the Ducks.

Anaheim, who have lost their last 11 games, has not seen a win since Dec. 17, where they defeated the Pittsburgh Penguins 4-2.

On the other side of the trade, Devin Shore started out the year in a strong way for Dallas. He had recorded 17 points (5 goals, 12 assists) in 42 games before getting traded. Shore had zero points in his last five games in Dallas.
