With the firing of Scott Linehan by the Dallas Cowboys, names are flying around about who the Cowboys should bring in, here is why it isn’t going to be Romo.

For those who have been following along since Friday after the firing of Scott Linehan, there have been a ton of names fans have been throwing out as the new offensive coordinator. One of the names keeps popping up, and fans should realize he is not coming to be a coach anytime soon. Sorry everyone, Tony Romo isn’t coming back to the Dallas Cowboys right now, it is time to drop it.

While it appears Jason Garrett will take over playcalling, we can assume the Dallas Cowboys will interview some people for their open offensive coordinator. While rumors have Kellen Moore as the frontrunner, fans and even some media have tried to stir up talk of Tony Romo. But looking at it rationally, Romo isn’t going to come.

History

Let’s go back to an interview Romo did just this past fall. While on 105.3 with Ben and Skin, the question was asked if Romo would come to be a coach if Jerry Jones called him. His response was, “Many years from now, I’m sure I’ll get back into the game a little bit from that perspective.” Not exactly what fans wanted to hear, but it is doubtful he has changed his mind in a few short months.

He continued in the same interview with, “Coaching takes up so much time away from your kids. I think that’s years down the road before I’d want to do that.” He has been pretty adamant in his statement to be a coach right now, and this again, was only a few months ago.

Reasons

One of the biggest reasons why Romo isn’t going to coach right now he alluded to in the quote above. He did continue in that same interview to talk about not wanting to be away from the kids and how much time coaching would take away from that. Yes, his kids are young and he is enjoying the time with them. This may be the biggest reason as to why he isn’t coming to coach.

While many fans think he makes more at CBS than he would be as a coach, the answer here is a little more murky. CBS does not divulge salary information, but he probably makes much less than the $6 million salary that Jason Garrett makes. However, he still probably makes more than enough with salary and endorsements. With a reported value of between $70-90 million, money is probably not the driving factor for Romo at this point. Candice, his wife, owns Hawk & Sloane with her friend, she has been reported as valued at over $10 million.

If you listened to Tony Romo call the AFC championship game, then you probably heard how much fun he was having. Romo is one of those guys who likes to have fun with whatever he is doing almost as much as he wants to be the best. Romo has said he is having fun announcing, this should never be overlooked when talking about Romo.

Maybe One Day

So, Romo has left the option to be a coach in the future wide open. Until he is ready to be a coach, he will continue to announce and spend time with his family. Money will not be the driving factor for Romo, it will be the desire to conquer another mountain for himself. Right now, he is conquering being an announcer, and enjoying it.

Also, no one has said Romo would for sure be the Dallas Cowboys coach if and when he becomes interested. Just because he played for the Cowboys, doesn’t mean that is where he will coach. He may want more control than the Jones family is willing to give. Who knows? Truth is he may or may not be the coach when and if he is ready.

The possibility is there, but until he shows interest, we have to believe what he says, and he is not interested. I think he will be a fantastic coach, not because he seems to have a crystal ball in the booth, but because Tony Romo refuses to fail. One day we may all find out, and maybe we won’t.

More from Dallas Cowboys

Moving On

Sorry to disappoint Cowboys’ fans, but for the time being Tony Romo is not coming out of the broadcast booth to be a coach. No matter what you may think of Kellen Moore or anyone else as OC, it is time to drop Romo as an idea.

While we all wait to see the moves the Cowboys make, take everything you hear with a grain of salt.

While Jerry Jones may indeed call Romo to get his current feelings, I wouldn’t hold my breath. Odds are it will be someone else. Better odds it will be someone very familiar with Jason Garrett who isn’t Tony Romo.

Let’s all take a deep breath and relax for a minute. We will have plenty of time to react to whoever the Cowboys actually do hire. But please, let’s drop the Tony Romo thing for now and move on. Let’s enjoy Romo in the booth, because he is on a totally different level and doing an amazing job. But he is not coming to coach for the Cowboys right now, it is time to move on, for now.
