Round 5, pick 166

DT Daniel Wise

6’3” 295lbs

Meet this season’s version of Dorance Armstrong Jr.

Just last year, the Dallas Cowboys picked an undervalued defensive linemen from Kansas – Dallas saw Armstrong was being double and even triple teamed in 2017, leading to unimpressive numbers, and a lowly draft status.

In much the same way Wise’s draft stock is hurting because he was consistently neutralized by opposing defenses who saw no other threats on the Kansas team.

Wise has good get-off and strong hand usage. Projected as a 3-technique DT, Wise shows an interest in run-stopping as well as the pass-rush. He doesn’t have the ceiling of Armstrong (who I hold in high regard) but looks like a solid rotational under tackle who has no glaring weakness.

The Dallas Cowboys are dangerously thin at DT. I expect Caruan Reid and Antwuan Woods to lock down the 1-tech next season and Tyrone Crawford and Maliek Collins to handle the 3-tech.  That doesn’t leave much room for injury and someone like Wise could go a long way in covering the team’s depth.

Note: With Crawford and Collins both entering what could be their final season with the Dallas Cowboys, it would be nice to see the team add some top-end talent. As stated at the beginning of this mock draft, DL Charles Omenihu is my top target in the second round but I have a sneaking suspicion he’ll be gone before Dallas every picks.

Wise is a big value pick who has starter potential with Rod Marinelli coaching him. He’s not flashy but works hard and has some natural skills.
