The blockbuster trade of the year appears to have just happened with the Dallas Mavericks acquiring Kristaps Porzingis in a multi-player deal. Let’s dive in deep and see what it all means.

In a fairly big city far far away in the heart of Latvia, a not so small man was building his legacy as a basketball player. From his hometown team in Liipaja, Latvia, he moved to Sevilla, Spain where his legend would only grow bigger. Alas came draft night, he was selected to a plethora of boos. Yet the legend of Kristaps Porzingis only continued to grow…

And somehow that legend has arrived in Dallas. In a one-of-a-kind blockbuster trade, the former face of the franchise for the New York Knicks has landed in the Big D. The New York Knicks have traded Kristaps Porzingis, Courtney Lee, Tim Hardaway Jr, and Trey Burke. In exchange, the Dallas Mavericks traded Dennis Smith Jr, DeAndre Jordan, and Wesley Matthews and two future 1st round draft picks. A 2021 unprotected pick and a 2023 Top 10 protected pick.

This trade couldn’t possibly look better for the Mavs. They get a young All-Star looking to return to the court as well as good role pieces. For the Knicks they finally found a point guard who is a good three point shooter, defender, and facilitator. The 15 assists DSJ had against the Knicks should definitely give Knicks fans hope he can be their PG of the future.

Every component of this trade makes it so interesting. Not only were there a large amount of people dealt in this exchange, but also the quality of players sent to both teams were surprisingly good. Rarely do you see so many starters in one exchange. It’s not like Porzingis was traded for 2 players and a 1st round pick, the entire transaction consisted of SEVEN players and TWO 1st round picks. This was as unusual of trade as they come.

Because this isn’t just about Porzingis, and many other parts were involved, I’ll be detailing the value of each asset in this trade and how both teams could benefit or break from this exchange.
