What the Rams and Patriots taught us about the Dallas Cowboys

After a lackluster Super Bowl, some are thinking the Dallas Cowboys could have won against the Patriots, and don’t understand why they lost to the Rams. This starts the offseason for the Cowboys.

Before the offseason starts with all of the moves, the signings, the draft, the contracts, all of it, the 2018 season ends with one of the worst Super Bowls ever, and Cowboys’ fans are confused. With the Rams beating the Cowboys, then laying an egg in the Super Bowl, the questions are how did they lose to the Rams and would they have done better in the Super Bowl.

The answers to both will probably both upset fans, and make total sense. The answer to the first question is they got outcoached and outplayed. The answer to the second question is, they probably would have been outcoached. They probably would have done better, but Bill Belichick did what Bill Belichick does, take away what you do best and force you to adjust. The Rams didn’t adjust.

The Rams ran all over the Cowboys because they used motion that confused the coaching staff and players. Essentially they got outcoached, and ironically, the Patriots did to the Rams what the Rams did to the Cowboys. Football is about matchups, and the Rams beat the Cowboys on those matchups. They schemed for the matchups and the Cowboys couldn’t adjust in time to win the game.

I do believe they would have scored more points in the Super Bowl because Sean McVay wasn’t ready. He assumed he could do what he had been doing all season, instead, the Patriots did what they hadn’t done all season. It was a simple outcoaching. So while the Cowboys would have scored more, I am not sure they would have won.

More from Dallas Cowboys

This isn’t to give no hope for next season, in fact, quite the opposite. With a talented roster, new offensive coordinator who should be more creative, and an understanding what went wrong against the Rams, Dallas Cowboys fans should have hope heading into the offseason.

There are some needs that the Cowboys have that got exposed against the Rams.

We have and will continue to assess the needs, but needless to say, the Cowboys will be “all-in” this season. Garrett is coaching for his job, Jerry is frustrated, and the players know they can hang with some of the best teams.

So here we are, the end of the 2018 season, and about two weeks away from being able to designate franchise players. Shortly after the Combine starts, then free agency, and the annual league meetings, all of this before the end of March. You can find the calendar here.

dark. Next. Dallas Cowboys: What if Dak and Garrett had failed like Goff and McVay?

Take the next few weeks to get to know the incoming rookies, the free agents, and salary cap situation. Before we know it, the 2019 offseason will kick into high gear. The Cowboys are not far off if they make the right moves and adjust their offensive plans. The Super Bowl is over, the 2018 season is done, welcome to the 2019 season.
