The Dallas Mavericks are in the final stretch of the NBA regular season. Regardless of how they finish, I am looking to when the Mavs can improve, that being Free Agency.

The Dallas Mavericks just traded their entire starting lineup to the Knicks and Kings in exchange for role players and some guy named… Kristaps Porzingis. Jokes aside, the Mavs look like they have a young dynamic duo and young role players for at least a decade. The Mavs have some cap space and should be looking to sign another player to improve the team.

Porzingis could sign his qualifying offer this off-season as a restricted free agent, but it seems the Mavs are looking to sign him to a 5-year deal in the ball park of $22-$25 M/yr. According to Spotrac.com, the Mavs have about $53 M in extra cap space for the 2019-2020 season so that would allow them to sign another player for about the same price.

The issue here is there aren’t many players signed under contract for next year. The current Mavs that aren’t under contract for next year are: Dorrian Finney-Smith, J.J. Barea, Maxi Kleber, Trey Burke, Devin Harris, Salah Mejri, and that German Guy.

Harris could retire and so could Dirk (not that we want him to). Barea is coming off of an achilles injury and Salah Mejri has been in and out of the roster this season. That leaves crucial players like Finney-Smith and Kleber to test the waters of Free Agency. With the way they’ve played this season, the Mavs might have to pay more in order to retain their services. Dwight Powell has a player option for next year, which at this point, is something the Mavs are going to have to deal with for the next season.

Regardless of whether or not they pay the people mentioned above for their services, there is definitely room for one more bigger name acquisition for the Mavs. For that reason, I will dig into some free agents the Mavs could look into signing come July.
