Nikola Vucevic, Orlando Magic, C

Vooch has been linked to the Mavs on several occasions and the situation would make sense. The Magic are improving in a weaker Eastern Conference on a team filled with young talent, but it might take them at least a few years to be a consistent threat for the finals. If Vooch wanted to play for a team that could do more than make the playoffs, he could leave his role in Orlando to come and play with two budding European stars.

In a free agency with big names, it’s unfortunate the Mavs can’t chase players like Kevin Durant, Kyrie Irving, or Kawhi Leonard. After big name players like these, you will find Khris Middleton and Tobias Harris. These players could either stay on their respective teams or flee to a New York team.

With the amount of max contract players available, there is always the possibility one of them wants to play with Luka and Kristaps, but that possibility is very little. What Dallas can’t provide is a big market, like New York, or a team that is close to contending for a championship. Even with Kristaps, the Mavs aren’t necessarily stacked talent-wise to make a push for the finals, or maybe I’m underselling the duo of Doncic and Porzingis?

So this is where Vucevic comes in. He isn’t a highly sought after player and he is currently playing on a team that is playing well as of late, but still isn’t very good. If the Mavs were to pursue him to be a free agent, he could feel compelled to switch organization.

Vucevic would help the Mavs offensively and in the rebounding department where is averaging career highs in this year. According to ESPN, Vooch is averaging 20.5 PPG, 12.1 RPG, on a consistent 50% from the floor and 38% from 3. With the shift in the Dallas offense, Vooch would fit right in and help the Mavs take the next step in becoming a championship caliber team again.

Unfortunately, Vucevic is the only max contract player that would even consider coming to Dallas. So the next few players I’ve listed are all players who can join the Mavs on cheaper contracts with the hope that they can produce in extended role playing situations.
