Dallas Mavericks: Who Should the Mavs Chase in Free Agency
Daniel Theis, Boston Celtics, PF
Oh look, another German big man that can space the floor and defend the post. Unlike other teams, the Mavs relish the opportunity to take a swing at players like Kleber and some guy named Dirk Nowitzki? That is because, unlike other teams, the Mavs seem to find the right players from Europe.
Theis has been in the league for two years and Boston was the team to discover him. However, Theis is only playing a small role on the team behind Al Horford and Aron Baynes while having dealt with various injuries of his own.
The trend is players who play well in Boston won’t play elsewhere. That was true with Isaiah Thomas, Jae Crowder, and Avery Bradley, who were all important players for that team in their push to the Eastern Conference Finals two seasons ago. Granted Thomas had two hip surgeries but the point still serves true.
However, that could be different with Theis. Theis’s skill set is perfect for this era of basketball. Even though he only plays 15 minutes per game, he shoots 57.8% from the field and 46% from 3. This is a bit deceiving as he only shoots 4.5 times and 1.1 3’s per game but this efficiency is insane from a bench player.
The Mavs should look to sign him and give him more minutes than he plays in Boston because he could provide the team with some legitimate scoring at the 4 position. It is unrealistic to expect him to shoot 46% from 3 with more playing time but even if he shoots better than 35% from 3, that’s an instant upgrade for this team.
