With the 2019 NFL Draft just over two months away, I wanted to start a mini-series detailing prospects at each position the Dallas Cowboys could look to select. This edition will be about the Safety Class.

On Christmas Eve 2017, the Cowboys were heading to the locker room knowing they failed to capitalize on a must-win game versus the Seahawks to have a chance at making the playoffs. Shortly after, Earl Thomas was seen outside the Cowboys locker room telling Jason Garrett, “if y’all have the chance, come get me.”

From this day, Cowboys fans have been eyeing the arrival of the University of Texas Alumnus. It seemed no matter who was playing either safety position, no one could be content knowing Earl Thomas wasn’t back there. In the defense of Woods, Heath, and Frazier, they all played admirably.

So now, after another full season of football for the Cowboys and another leg injury for the 3 time First Team All-Pro, the Cowboys might finally have the chance at signing the guy fans have wanted since Christmas Eve. After the Errol Spence-Mikey Garcia Press Conference, Jerry Jones was heard saying this according to Jon Machota.

While we like to decode this “cryptic” message, we should consider some things.

First, Earl Thomas isn’t the only safety looking to hit the market, it was announced that Landon Collins is not going to be a New York Giant moving further according to Josina Anderson.

Oh also all these safeties will be available for the Cowboys as well according to Chad Forbes.

The best fits from the list are definitely Earl Thomas and Landon Collins but there is still some solid talent available for the Cowboys if they didn’t want to make a push for these two free agents.

Second, this message is very vague but generally when Jerry says something like this, it means something is in store for the future. The question is who the Cowboys are pursuing and while we make guesses, some being more accurate than others, we ultimately don’t know whom the Cowboys are looking to sign.

Third, if for whatever reason the Cowboys don’t actually sign a safety during free agency and we all look foolish for believing the words that came out of Jerry Jones’s mouth, there are some in the draft who could provide some depth and valuable playing time for the Cowboys next year.

For that reason, I will be discussing 10 safety prospects in this draft. We will be describing them in three categories; What’s Good, What Ain’t Good, and Could He Be a Cowboy? What’s Good and What Ain’t Good will address the best and the worst traits of the player; I think you get the gist of what the last category entails.
