Round 2 – Daylon Mack – Defensive Tackle – Texas A&M

With the impending suspension of Randy Gregory for an indefinite period of time and David Irving being David Irving, the need for defensive line help bumps up a little. There was no doubt the Cowboys already needed to look at the position and they fill it in the second round of the draft. I am assuming the Cowboys get Earl Thomas or another safety in free agency, so defensive tackle is the pick.

Mack confused me while watching his tape a little. He gets off the ball really quick, but his pass rush isn’t anywhere near consistent. However, he sheds blocks well and plays the run well enough to be a starter day one. I am not sure if his pass rush issues are hand usage or not enough in his toolkit yet, but I believe with his size and speed he has the ability to get a pass rush with some teaching. Rod Marinelli should be able to unlock his abilities.

I think he fits because right away he can be used in a typical Marinelli rotation right off the bat in run situations. If he can develop his pass rush a little more he could be a complete defensive tackle and a solid piece along the front line. If he can get his balance and hand usage better he can be a star.
