PHILADELPHIA, PA – SEPTEMBER 01: Ryquell Armstead #7 of the Temple Owls runs the ball and is tackled by Malik Fisher #92 of the Villanova Wildcats in the first quarter at Lincoln Financial Field on September 1, 2018 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. (Photo by Mitchell Leff/Getty Images) /

Ryquell Armstead, Temple, Running Back

Armstead impressed at the combine when he needed it the most. He didn’t have a good senior bowl, much like other running backs, so running the second fastest unofficial 40 time should be helpful in deciding how an NFL team would use him.

In Armstead’s film he displays the ability to hit the hole quickly with a decent burst. His agility is better than average but forcing to him change direction definitely limits his effectiveness. He doesn’t possess the ability to catch the ball consistently. In some ways, he seems like a poor man’s Leonard Fournette.

Now looking at his 3 cone drill and 20 yard shuttle, they tell a bit of different story. His 7.02 second 3 cone drill was the 5th fastest time and his 4.29 second 20 yard shuttle was the 6th fastest time at the combine. 7.02 seconds was well within the threshold for the 3 cone drill for running backs but his 4.29 seconds was a bit past the threshold on the 20 yard shuttle.

They both are good numbers so we shouldn’t be deciding the type of player he is with his combine measureables considering he has more than 2 years of film sitting there to be viewed. Armstead’s 4.45 second 40 yard dash should help raise his draft stock knowing that he doesn’t provide additional value as a receiver.
