Isaiah Buggs, Alabama, Defensive Linemen

I mentioned earlier that on a day where a lot of people ran well, it was easy to tell those who stood out for a bad reason. Buggs was one of those prospects. Here were his numbers:

40 yard dash: 5.15 seconds

Vertical Jump: 24.5 inches

Broad Jump: 8′

3 Cone Drill: 8.01 seconds

20 yard shuttle: 4.83 seconds

Isaiah Buggs stands at 6’3″ and 306 lbs and he lines up as a defensive tackle on a usual basis. Even with his fairly big body, none of these numbers are good. Dexter Lawrence weighed in at 342 lbs and ran a 5.05 second 40 yard dash. Obviously, this is a unique occurrence of a bigger guy running faster than Buggs, but the rest of his combine wasn’t particularly good.

His agility proved extremely porous running an EIGHT second 3 cone drill, his burst is seriously lacking with a pedestrian vertical jump, broad jump, and 20 yard shuttle. For a guy who plays inside and was known for rushing the passer, his lack of athleticism is going to make it harder for him to be successful.

He had solid production as a pass rusher in his final season at Alabama, but it’s possible that was aided by his teammates taking up other blockers. His combine will decrease his value from a Day 2 prospect to a Day 3 prospect. Hopefully he ends up in a situation where he can be overcome his athletic deficiencies to be successful.
