Ben Banogu, TCU, EDGE

Banogu was going to be on this list because he broke the record for broad jump by a defensive lineman. Here were the rest of his numbers:

40 yard dash: 4.62 seconds

Vertical Jump: 40 inches

Broad Jump: 11’2″

3 Cone Drill: 7.02 seconds

20 yard shuttle: 4.27 seconds

Banogu is a raw prospect but a team looking to develop an edge rusher could take a chance on the Horned Frog because he’s oozing with athletic potential. He has the burst and agility scouts love to see at the edge position, something even the most refined pass rushers wish they had.

Banogu also had a solid senior bowl so scouts were already paying attention to him, but his combine performance was perhaps the best thing to happen to him in his draft process. His draft stock probably won’t increase too much because his film shows he’s a bit raw, but that makes him a perfect 5th round pickup. He’d be best for a team not in grave need of an edge rusher.

Dre’Mont Jones, Ohio State, Defensive Linemen

Jones is another example of a stand out who had a very poor combine. Here were his numbers:

40 yard dash: 5.12 seconds

Vertical Jump: 31.5 inches

Broad Jump: 9’2″

3 Cone Drill: 7.71 seconds

20 yard shuttle: 4.53 seconds

A 5.12 second 40 yard dash isn’t bad, but Jones is only 283 pounds. Clearly his burst and his agility are an issue. The 4.53 20 yard shuttle isn’t a pleasant number and neither is the 7.71 3 cone drill. As a defensive tackle, those two drills were important. They show the prospects explosiveness and agility, two traits important for success at the position.

Jones’s production at Ohio State speaks for itself, and unlike Isaiah Buggs, the Buckeyes don’t have that much talent on the line. (Outside of Nick Bosa and only Nick Bosa) This performance was perplexing. No one could’ve expected Jones to test so poorly.

Hopefully his draft stock doesn’t fall because his film resembles a Day 2 prospect. He probably should stay where he is projected.
