If the Cowboys select a tight end, it won’t be until the 5th round…

I’ll admit, this take isn’t very “hot.” However, with all of us placing such an emphasis on tight ends in our mock drafts not seeing the Cowboys select one earlier seems a bit strange. Perhaps the biggest thing the combine reaffirmed was that this Tight End class is DEEP.

Both Iowa tight ends, Fant and Hockensen, both showed they were first round caliber tight ends with fantastic times on the drills and great catching ability. Irv Smith showed he was at the worst a late second round selection. This is where things get interesting.

Literally no one had a worse day than Isaac Nauta. (This one hurts cause his film showed he was WAY better than we could’ve imagined) Jace Sternberger proved he was an average athlete and the concerns he posed on film were evident at the combine. After these two the tight ends available get interesting.

Foster Moreau turned some heads with his athleticism after playing in an LSU offense that clearly under-utilized him. Josh Oliver ran extremely well helping his draft stock which started around mid-day 3. Caleb Wilson ran an unprecedented 4.56 40 yard dash and was average at everything else. Kahale Warring showed he had some athleticism to his big build. Dax Raymond was also interviewed by the Cowboys after a good day of drills.

It seemed that most of this tight end class was ready to come at showcase their athleticism. (Rest in peace Nauta, Gentry, and Smith) There were also some like Dawson Knox who have the athleticism but weren’t able to test at the combine because of injury. The talent pool at this position is fantastic.

Also it’s worth mentioning the Cowboys are going to have 3 tight ends on the roster once the league year starts with the addition of Jason Witten. The hope is that Witten will mentor the younger guys and for that reason the Cowboys could look to draft another tight end from this class with athletic upside.

However, looking from a numbers perspective, that just doesn’t seem likely. Schultz and Jarwin seem to be the future at the position so bringing in another guy who needs his share of playing time along with Witten and these two just doesn’t seem feasible. They had 4 tight ends on the roster last year but Gathers didn’t play for a good portion of the season and Schultz was a healthy scratch for a few games.

However, the Cowboys wouldn’t have felt the need to interview a few tight ends if they weren’t interested in picking one. Right?
