Thanks to recent salary dump the Dallas Mavericks are expected to be big players in free agency this summer, might Patrick Beverley be a good fit?

The Dallas Mavericks were always supposed to have cap space this summer, so to the casual observer, it’s no surprise they still have lofty expectations heading into the summer of 2019. But after the Dallas Mavericks took on the contracts of Courtney Lee and Tim Hardaway Jr in the Kristaps Porzingis trade, things didn’t look good for their free agency plans.

With little to no money available to sign free agents, the Mavs salary dumped their second best player (excluding the sidelined Porzingis, of course) and freed up big cash going into next season. The dump may have hurt their play this season, but it gave them options heading into free agency.

Now, we can talk max contracts for max players. The Dallas Mavericks aren’t technically there, but they have the ability to get there with a little creative movement. But before we look at those prized free agents, let’s look a level below.

Let’s look at Patrick Beverley.

Patrick Beverley, 30, is everyone’s favorite opponent to hate. The tenacious defender harasses his opponent – both mentally and physically. Recently, the 6’1″ 185lbs, guard made LeBron James his victim. After demanding to be matched up on the best player in the league, Beverley clearly got the best of him.

In much the same way Ron Artest (later known as (Metta World Peace) and Lance Stephenson harass(ed), so does Beverley. The good thing with Beverley is he doesn’t appear to be as unstable as the aforementioned two, and he’s pretty revered by teammates and coaches.

Beverley fits with the Mavs because he makes up in areas where Luka Doncic lacks – defense. Doncic is never going to be a plus defender and whoever joins him in the lineup next year, will always be matched up against the opponent’s best offensive guard.

Beverley also isn’t going to break the bank. He’ll be 31-years-old by the time next season starts and his numbers have declined offensively (from 9.1 to 7.5 points per game). But what he’s lost in totals, he’s gained in other ways and his effective FG% has gone up from 51.6 to 52. Additionally, he’s shooting 39% from deep and grabbing 5.1 rebounds and 3.6 assists (both up from his career averages).

Patrick Beverley is currently finishing the final year on a 4-year/$23 million dollar deal and looks to get one more good contract before he begins “borrowed time”.

Patrick Beverley clearly isn’t the prize of the offseason but he’d be a nice complement to Luka Doncic and would add a little grit to this young Dallas Mavericks team. Best yet, he’d leave plenty of money to adequately address other areas of the team.
