The 2019 NFL Draft is now just 7 weeks away so I wanted to continue the mini-series detailing prospects at each position the Dallas Cowboys could look to select. This edition will be about the Running Back Class.

The Dallas Cowboys have a glaring hole at running back. Ezekiel Elliott is the only signed running back with guaranteed playing time and those following him in the depth chart are Darius Jackson and Jordan Chunn. In all fairness to both guys, they just haven’t done anything in the league to warrant job security.

The Cowboys have not expressed any interest in re-signing Rod Smith. This is for good reason, Rod Smith wasn’t the complementary piece for Zeke because he didn’t provide a different skill set for the Cowboys at the running back position. He is as much a between-the-tackles type runner as Zeke, except without his burst and receiving ability.

In addition, running backs are perhaps the most replaceable players on teams so paying so much for someone who doesn’t bring additional value to his skill set is foolish. The draft always provides teams the opportunity

Fortunately, this draft class has running backs with different abilities that should help the Cowboys offense and more importantly Zeke. Zeke has started 40 games for the Cowboys and has touched the ball, either by a carry or catch, 1003 times. It’s no secret he’s the focal point of this offense but it’s still surprising how durable he has been for the Cowboys.

In order to help give him a few more productive seasons in the league, the Cowboys should help Zeke and themselves get a running back who wouldn’t be used only as Zeke’s backup. They should look for someone who can help get Zeke off the field, thus preserving his body while getting different usage out of the running back position.

Here are 10 prospects the Dallas Cowboys could look to draft at the running back position in the 2019 NFL Draft.
