David Montgomery, Iowa State

What’s Good: Tackle Breaking, Balance, Vision, Cutting Ability

What Ain’t Good: Athleticism

Montgomery is a unique prospect. He lacks the athleticism most have at the running back position yet he is one of the most productive backs in the class. He had a poor offensive line at Iowa State and was the main source of offense for the team with inconsistent quarterback play.

Montgomery’s play is predicated on his vision and his agility. He see’s holes open instantly and using his supreme cutting ability creates running lanes. He’s so powerful when changing direction he’s caused injuries. (West Virginia game) Montgomery’s value comes from his ability to outsmart his opponent as a runner.

However, his athleticism is a serious concern. It isn’t often you find successful running backs run 40 yard dashes in 4.6 seconds, but that was expected from Montgomery when you watched his tape. He doesn’t have the burst of other running backs and even at his fastest he can get chased from behind by corners and safeties.

However, in his absence, he has the vision, agility, and strength to make up for it. He’s tremendous at breaking tackles and staying upright that he can fight for more yards after contact than other backs. Montgomery should be productive in the NFL but it might take a good offensive line to do that. (As with a lot of other running backs)

Could he be a Cowboy?:

No. I can’t fathom the Cowboys selecting a running back like Montgomery knowing they’d have to take him early. Montgomery is a legitimate Day 2 pick even with his lack of athleticism and with the number of needs on this Cowboys team, they need to invest higher at some other positions. Selecting Montgomery would be an improper use of these assets.

In addition, he wouldn’t be a complementary piece to Zeke. His skill set is more aligned with a three down back who spends most of his time in the back field. I’ve reiterated enough times that this isn’t the right back for the Cowboys at this time.
