Chase Winovich, Michigan

What’s Good: Burst, Instincts, Tackling, Athleticism, Hair

What Ain’t Good: Creativity, Arm length

Let the record know I love Winovich. He’s got great awareness of the ball, he gets off the line quick and uses his 4.59 40 yard dash speed to run past tackles, and he’s a sure tackler even with his relatively smaller arms. Did I mention the luscious hair?

Winovich was praised for his constant effort on the field. No matter the snap, he’s always playing at full speed. Whether he was unsuccessfully chasing a running back down or breaking up a screen play, he was always running on the field. However, with his effort, I don’t think people address his instincts enough.

He is constantly looking for the ball. In read option situations he doesn’t fall for the quarterback’s tricks. He will stop a run in the backfield. When rushing the passer he’s always looking here ball is so he can go an pursue the ball carrier. His motor and eyes just don’t stop.

His flexibility is good but he himself is not very big. His main move is a swipe or he tries to speed rush to the outside. If he isn’t quick enough the line, he gets caught easily by the tackle. Also if the offensive lineman is notably bigger than him, he can get caught in his tracks.

Where does he fit?:

Winovich would be a good addition to the defensive line. Not only would he have the opportunity to play with his former teammates Taco and Jourdan, but he would provide solid depth to the team. He has the mentality that would bode well with teammates and the maturity to grow as a pass rusher. Marinelli can really help develop his skill set.

Not only did play different spots on the edge at his time in Michigan, but also he played some 3 technique. He provides the Cowboys some positional flexibility, but that would not be the reason the Cowboys draft Winovich. His skill would be best used by lining up at any outside spot and speed rushing.
