Shareef Miller, Penn State

What’s Good: Explosive, Strength

What Ain’t Good: Hand Usage, Missed Tackles

Shareef Miller projects as a Day 3 guy who could develop nicely for the Cowboys in the long run. However, the Cowboys are in grave need of some pass rushing help so let me discuss what he can do now.

Miller is 6’4″ and 254 pounds and he ran 4.69 second 40 yard dash according to NFL.com. He has an ideal frame for an edge rusher. While he could gain some weight, the weight that’s listed is still playable.

Shareef Miller is raw at this point in his career. Out of all the defensive ends I’ve discussed in this article, he looked like a mess compared to everyone else. His hand usage was poor and his instincts, especially in the run game, weren’t very good. Another year at Penn State may have helped him in some of these aspects.

Something Miller has that’s really good is his explosiveness and his strength. He gets off the line extremely quickly and when he is pass rushing, he’s able to use his strength to bull rush opposing offensive linemen. He doesn’t possess much else in his pass rushing repertoire but that’s expected of someone who is as raw as Miller.

The athletic tools are there for Miller, but it’s going to take someone with patience and a experienced coaching staff to turn Miller into a consistent pass rusher. So how would he affect the Cowboys…

Where does he fit?:

The Cowboys were apparently not at Penn State’s pro day which means they were not interested in players like Shareef Miller or even Miles Sanders for that matter. If the Cowboys for whatever reason do decide they want Miller, the expectation is they have someone in front of him playing meaningful snaps. Lawrence, Crawford, Armstrong, and Taco aren’t exactly fantastic depth that would help Miller grow as a pass rusher.

However, he is a pass rusher with upside and in a league that covets players like these, what’s to say the Cowboys won’t draft someone like him?
