Tytus Howard, OT, Alabama State

Howard was invited to the Senior Bowl in January and he played well in Mobile. Howard has the measurements that teams love at 6’5″ and 322 pounds even if his 34″ are just good enough. As a pass protector, Howard shows he provides a solid base with his feet and his hip flexibility allows for seamless change of direction.

Howard would significantly improve if he gained some serious muscle he could be a lot more effective. He has the size and feet to handle pass rushers really well but when he gets bull rushed he starts to lose his footing. (It’s not like he falls to the ground he just stands really tall and loses his leverage on the pass rusher)

In addition, his run protection is a work in progress. Because of his lack of play strength, he isn’t able to move people “against their will” as easily. Also when zone blocking he isn’t physical enough with his blocks at the first level. When run blocking, he’ll simply jab at the edge rusher before he runs to block the linebacker at the next level. This allows edge rushers to make plays on the running back.

The Cowboys have been looking to develop a swing tackle and Howard would give them the perfect chance to do that if he’s available in the third round. Howard has the traits and athleticism that project well at the next level. Hopefully Marc Colombo can do his magic and fix some of his technique as well.
