Wyatt Ray, EDGE, Boston College

The need for an edge rusher is evident for the Cowboys. Unfortunately, almost every time I ran a mock draft the only edge rusher I could find in the second round was Christian Miller. (This happened twice and I selected him both times) There was no reason to reach for a Day 3 edge prospect in the second round.

So that is why Wyatt Ray has found himself with the Cowboys in the 5th round. He played a similar role as Harold Landry did for the Eagles the season before, and like Landry he found instant success. According to Sports Reference, Ray had 9 sacks and 11 tackles for loss last season in his first season as a starter.

As a prospect Ray is a bit unpolished and could look to get a bit stronger. At 6’3″ and 257 pounds, he has decent size to play edge rusher. (DeMarcus Lawrence is 6’3″ and 251 pounds) Unlike Lawrence, he needs some refinement in his technique especially when the blocker wins at the point of attack. The BC product is also not super athletic.

According to NFL.com, his vertically jumped 34″ and broad jumped 9’10.” He also ran a 7.34 second 3 cone drill and 4.31 short shuttle. All these numbers are average suggesting his burst his average and that his flexibility is something left to be desired. For prospects that don’t necessarily “wow” with their athleticism but have some solid production, the 4th and 5th round seems to be their rounds.

Ray is very much a developmental prospect, which doesn’t sound great for the Cowboys, but his production and film should give teams a reason to be intrigued because it isn’t common you see a guy who has produced so much while being a more raw pass rusher.
