Round 4 – Daylon Mack – Defensive Tackle – Texas A&M

I found the pick of Daylon Mack to be interesting, perplexing, and just what the Cowboys needed here. I really wanted to grab a defensive tackle earlier, but the draft just wasn’t falling the way I wanted or thought it would. Mack was there with Weber at the pick above and I thought Weber would be gone by this pick and it held up.

Mack is not the typical defensive tackle the Dallas Cowboys tend to draft. He is stout, powerful, and is a classic run-stuffer. Mack has great strength and has good vision for the ball carrier. He will throw off blocks and keep gap integrity while seeking the running back. He is quicker side to side than many would think and has decent flexibility. He will push the line back with his power and be moderately disruptive at times.

The downside to Mack is he is not really going to be a pass rusher. He doesn’t have a lot of moves to get around his blocker and looks like he uses his strength exclusively. He is a true 1-tech defensive tackle and while Marinelli has not been a guy to draft one, Richard might be. If Mack can improve his pass rush skills he would be a steal in the fourth round.
