Round 7 – Deshaun Davis – Linebacker – Auburn

There are several ways to go in the seventh round. You usually grab someone who has dropped or you think won’t make it to undrafted free agency. Davis is the later, and while defensive end or offensive line could be grabbed, Davis was one of the best players at a position the Cowboys needed and so, he was drafted often.

Davis is a Jason Garrett type of guy. He is a leader on defense and goes about the game the right way and works really hard. He is extremely smart at reading an offense and knowing where the play is going to go. If Davis tackles you, you are going down. While not the best in coverage, or in pass rushing, or even in speed. He makes up for a lot in his intelligence and tenacity. He plays hard, hits hard, and works his tail off.

Don’t ask Davis to drop into coverage a lot, nor ask him to blitz the passer. Ask Davis to hit people, take up blocks, and stop the ball carrier. He would be part of a rotation at this point, but a solid contributor on both special teams and in obvious run situations. He has the makings of a leader, but his talent doesn’t always match his heart.

Wrap-up

I think that the Cowboys could walk away from this draft with more picks than they currently have, but I also feel that if they stay put they can fill enough depth needs that no one would be upset either. A cornerback like Chris Westry could be grabbed in the seventh instead of Davis, but should be a target immediately after the draft if not grabbed.

With a little way to go until the actual draft, some of this could change, but we have a fairly solid picture of where players will fall. Depending on how other teams value certain players the Cowboys should be able to grab a few of their visits. One thing about the draft, is you don’t know how it will shake out until after it happens.
