Miles Boykin, Notre Dame

What’s Good: Athleticism, Size, Hands

What Ain’t Good: Route Running, Separation Against Press Coverage

I would bet that Miles Boykin will be over-drafted because of his athleticism. Boykin had quite the combine displaying elite speed, burst, and agility. It’d be nice if that athleticism showed up on film more often.

Boykin is not an effective route runner. Boykin is a tall guy who generally runs with long strides. This is okay when running deep but not for short area routes. He has to change his stride to run shorter routes and it is easier to tell for the defender guarding him.

For how big and strong Boykin is, he does not fair well against press man coverage. He doesn’t use his speed, size, and agility to create separation. After the war at the line of scrimmage, he struggles to focus on catching the ball when the cornerback continues to be physical. He doesn’t handle physicality well.

He does beat zone coverage well and can make jump ball catches with regularity. He is also a good deep threat because he is fast and explosive. He rarely drops the ball because of a lack of concentration, almost all drops were a result of some coverage. Boykin also had average production for someone of his talent.

The Cowboys interviewed Boykin at the Combine and aren’t likely to have any further interaction with the Irish product. He is taller than and bigger than the Cowboys mold for the Cowboys and he predominantly plays on the outside. The Cowboys are in need of a receiver with more slot ability and Boykin isn’t quite that. He will also need to develop quite a bit as a route runner.

Boykin isn’t the ideal pick for the Cowboys considering all the necessary development for his game.
