Jeffery Simmons

If moving up for Chase Winovich is acting with an eye to the future, moving up for Simmons is with mind, body, and soul fixated on the future. It’s no mystery 3-technique defensive tackle is weakness on this team.

Even if Taco Charlton, Kerry and Tyrone Crawford take snaps inside, there isn’t a pure under tackle on this roster. And with Maliek Collins, who can play both tackle spots, a free agent at the end of the year, this problem looks like it could grow significantly in the not-too-distant future.

Jeffery Simmons, rated early as a top-15 talent, saw his draft stock plummet after some off-field questions and a torn ACL derailed him.

How far Simmons falls is anyone’s guess, but given Jaylon Smith’s draft position a few years back, many are projecting Simmons to be picked somewhere between Picks 32-42. Would it be wise for Dallas to use their top-2 picks on a player who will probably never play this season? Probably not but when has long-sighted gambles deterred them before?

After a year of rehab and grooming under Rod “Never Say Retire” Marinelli, Simmons would be the odds-on favorite to be the starting 3-tech in 2020.

If Dallas thinks they are truly ready as-is, and don’t see a rookie making an impact on their title run here in 2019, then they could do worse than draft the best player on the board.
