Dallas Cowboys 7-Round Mock Draft: Breaking from the norm
By Reid Hanson
Round 7, pick 241
(CB) Chris Westry
Kentucky
6’3″ 195lbs
Link to Dallas: 30- visitor
Chris Westry wasn’t invited to the NFL Combine and is considered a priority free agent to most, yet he warrants selection here because of his size, skill, and testing.
Westry tested well at Kentucky’s Pro Day, consequently jumping on to a few team’s radars. Dallas liked him enough to make him one of their 30-visitors. Blessed with tremendous length and good athleticism (ranked 22nd by 3sigma athlete) Westry is a guy Kris Richard would enjoy developing.
Westry has loads of experience, heavily contributing over the past three seasons. He makes boneheaded decisions sometimes and will need help with technique as well as decision-making. But he’s a great fit for Dallas’ Single High scheme that often asks CBs to cover up the sideline.
That’s a wrap!
While it’s perfectly possible many of these players will be gone at their respective draft positions, it’s not unrealistic and it’s following some of the trends the big boards are indicating. Additionally, this offers alternative scenarios at a time when most mock drafts are starting to all look alike.
Needs Addressed: SS, CB, DT, RB, TE, WR
Needs Neglected: OT
Note: Re-signing Cameron Fleming made offensive tackle less of a need. La’el Collins is likely to leave in 2020 and Fleming can take over while Dallas develops a long-term fixture at RT.
The top of this draft unfolded as a best case scenario with Taylor Rapp and Jace Sternberger falling but as I cited in the recent big boards, it’s not entirely surprising.
