Pick No. 136:

Stanley Morgan Jr, Wide Receiver, Nebraska

This pick felt really weird to make but considering the remaining talent pool, Morgan felt like the best option. All really good tight ends have passed, the edge rushers weren’t amazing, the corner backs that fit Kris Richard’s criteria are long gone, and we just selected a running back.

So lets add a productive wide receiver to the Cowboys with the hopes he can cement himself as the future slot receiver for the Cowboys. His size resembles that of a smaller slot receiver and his agility and route running help him get open with ease. Morgan would have to deal with the regular learning curve for wide receivers, but the Cowboys have Randall Cobb so it’s not necessary he play immediately.

At this point, Morgan made the most sense for the Cowboys. It is apparent now the Cowboys are relying on route running technicians to get open for the quarterback. Morgan is that type of receiver.

I’m sure the Cowboys would like to add a receiver in this draft after bringing in Deebo Samuel, Mecole Hardman, Emmanuel Hall, Jon’Vea Johnson, and Jalen Hurd for national visits. Samuel, Hardman, and Hall were already selected. Hurd could be a selection here but I’m not sure how quickly the Cowboys are willing to abandon the smaller slot receiver mold.

Johnson at this point would be a reach. I personally like Johnson but it seems the consensus on his value is a 6th round pick. Even though the Cowboys don’t have a 6th, it obviously doesn’t make sense to reach for a player just to fill a position which may be seen as need one year from now.

I think Morgan is the best bang for the buck at this point in the ,draft and he could have a bigger impact than anticipated for the Cowboys.
