Andrew Dowell – Outside Linebacker – Michigan State

Dowell was another player that I didn’t do a ton of review on prior to the draft. I have seen him play as I am a Buckeyes fan, so I have seen a little bit of him against the Buckeyes. He is quietly a solid linebacker who might be able to stick around as a depth player. He does some things really well, but nothing so spectacular that jumps out at you.

Dowell is another linebacker who plays well coming downfield toward the ball carrier. He creates huge hits and jars the football loose fairly often. In coverage he has some ability but isn’t consistent enough to be an every down guy right now. He spots the ball well, moves to it, tackles well, and looks to have a good football IQ.

Where Dowell will have problems is his play strength. He gets washed out fairly easily and in coverage isn’t as fluid as you would want consistently. He is a little short and will need to work on technique against taller tight ends. He could be a sleeper with a year or two of work, but could be a solid depth player for a while if he can play special teams like he plays linebacker, fast and hard hitting.
