Chris Westry – Cornerback – Kentucky

I didn’t evaluate Westry before the draft, so I had to go back and look at him. There are some traits I love about his game, and then there are some I think will hurt him from staying on the roster long-term. He is a perfect Kris Richard guy in size, strength, and toughness. His workout was probably the reason the Cowboys went after him after the draft.

What I love about Westry is his ability to get his head turned around to track the football. Ball skills are something the Cowboys have lacked in the secondary. His play speed and height make him hard to throw over and he does well in press coverage. All of this could allow him to find a spot at the very least on the practice squad.

What I don’t like about Westry, that could spell his demise on the roster is his inability to play shifty receivers. Also, the way he plays comeback routes is visually ugly. He opens his hips early and will get stuck getting in front of the receiver. He won’t get beat deep playing the traditional outside CB role in the Cover 3, but will probably get beat on short routes and double moves.

Consider him a project player who fits on the outside.
