Dallas Cowboys: Undrafted Free Agents, Who Are They?
Jon’Vea Johnson – Wide Receiver – Toledo
Johnson was another player I didn’t look at pre-draft, but I do have a few contacts that went to Toledo, so I did get some info from them as well. Johnson will have a hard time making the roster this season, but his speed and physical attributes could land him on the practice squad as a developmental player.
Johnson runs about a 4.40, 40 time, and his game tape pretty much matches this. He can take one to the house if he gets open and has enough and he has the strength to break an arm tackle. He runs pretty solid routes and will almost always work back to his quarterback. All of which are huge positives in an NFL receiver.
Where Johnson has issues is catching. His hands are not great and he body catches a little too much for my liking. Also, while he runs solid routes, he doesn’t get a ton of separation. Even through he looks quick generally speaking, he doesn’t seem to put it on display in and out of breaks while running the route – he usually shows it only after the route when the ball is in his hands.
He needs to learn to use his speed better in routes and catch with his hands better.
