Luke Gifford – Outside Linebacker – Nebraska

Luke Gifford was a slightly hard study since he really only played a lot in his senior year, and prior to that the Huskers played a 4-3 defense and went to a 3-4 this season. Watching him, I tried to figure out if he was an outside linebacker or a defensive end. For now I will list him as an outside linebacker (probably SAM), but he could potentially play some defensive end.

Gifford had a ridiculous 12.5 tackles for loss this season for the Huskers. Watching some of his tape, he spots the ball carrier quickly, breaks on it, and makes solid tackles. He added some weight to be a pass rusher, and his athleticism didn’t take much of a hit. He has some okay pass rush moves, but his strength right now is in the run game.

Gifford will need work in the passing game if he is to be a 4-3 outside linebacker. He will need to add a little weight and work on his pass rush skills to be a defensive end. He is a little bit of a tweener, but looks good when asked to play within his skillset.
