What Randall Cobb are we going to get?

I think Randall Cobb will play like we expect. He should line up predominantly in the slot and he should be tasked with helping convert short third downs like Beasley did for the Cowboys. I believe with Kellen Moore, Cobb will be allowed to run a larger route tree than what Linehan would’ve asked him to do.

I think Cobb’s season will end as such:

Receiving:

12 games/4 started/48 receptions/520 yards/10.8 yards per reception/4 Touchdowns/3 Drops

Rushing:

12 rushes/43 yards/3.58 yards per carry/2 Fumbles

The numbers might seem relatively low for a #3 receiver, but I expect the Cowboys to share the load with all their playmakers. History has shown they carry 6 wide receivers, however, they might look to increase that number this season.

By doing so, the Cowboys would be adding serious speed in some combination of Jon’Vea Johnson, Jalen Guyton, Reggie Davis, or Tavon Austin. These receivers could command fewer targets but are the predominant deep threat options.

Even with Cobb’s route tree, I believe the Cowboys will look to faster talent when going deep. This leaves Cobb playing mostly short to intermediate routes. At the same time, I also don’t believe the Cowboys will employ the four receivers above with the frequency that they suggest. Even if that were the case, that should not change Cobb’s role.

Cobb has walked into a good situation with a clear role and a team needing his assistance. All we can hope is that the rapport between Dak and Cobb gets stronger as the year progresses and that Cobb does not suffer from injuries.
