TCU Horned Frogs Football: Four Takeaways From Purdue
By Cody Smith
Sunday night saw the TCU Horned Frogs took on the Purdue Boilermakers in some non-conference action, which saw the Frogs win decisively 34-13.
Going into the game, it appeared that the TCU Horned Frogs would be in a tough, defensive battle with the Boilermakers for all 60 minutes of the game. Even all the betting lines figured the game to be a tight, one-score battle.
After handily beating Purdue, the Frogs now sit at 2-0, and have a date with the rival SMU Mustangs next Saturday. Now that the TCU Horned Frogs have two games under their belt, it’s time to get some takeaways for them so far this season…
Gary Patterson’s Defense
Coach Patterson is always known for having great defenses during his time at TCU, and this year should be nothing different. Purdue struggled to move the ball all game, and the only touchdown they scored was in garbage time. This year, Patterson has one of his best defensive lines ever during his stint with the Frogs (Purdue can attest to that!), and it should be a fun year to watch what his defense can do.

QB1 Situation
Alex Delton was horrible Saturday night, completing as many passes to his receivers as he did to defenders (one!!). Max Duggan wasn’t much better, going 7/18 for 70 yards and a TD. In Duggan’s defense, most of his incompletions were drops by his receivers, because he was humming the ball in so fast to them. It’s looking like the race to be the QB1 is all but settled, with Duggan taking the reigns, even though Patterson refused to admit it after the game (likely to make SMU play for Delton).
Running Game
The Frogs looked like men among boys during the game when they ran the ball. Both Darius Anderson and Sewo Olonilua rushed for over 100 yards, combining for three touchdowns. The offensive line was also terrific, as they imposed their will on Purdue, as Anderson, Olonilua, and Emari Demercado all averaged over 5.5 yards per carry. In short, the big boys on the line, and the TCU Horned Frogs running backs all feasted on that Boilermaker defense.
Special Teams
Since the departure of Jaden Oberkrom in 2015, the Horned Frogs have really struggled on special teams, with the unit costing them a handful of games since then. Jonathan Song is trying to put weary Horned Frog fans at ease, and helped in doing that Saturday night, making both of his field goals (with a long of 40), and all four of his extra points.
So far this season, Song has been a perfect 7/7 on FG’s and 6/6 on PAT’s.
