Dallas Cowboys: The Cowboys are pretenders until proven otherwise
By Dink Kearney
The Dallas Cowboys repeatedly play uninspired football to a lesser opponent, and until this team can fix this issue, they cannot be taken seriously.
The Dallas Cowboys are the most watched football team in the NFL. We all know the Cowboys have the highest rated games throughout the season, regardless of who they play. That’s because they have the most die-hard fans, the most die-hard haters, and have a certain fare for the dramatic that make a seemingly unwatchable game, somehow exciting.
I’m confident the Cowboys could schedule a game against a Pop Warner football team and the ratings would be off the charts because…well…the Cowboys would find a way to make a winnable game a dramatic one to an inferior opponent like a Pee-Wee football team from the Pop Warner league.
In fact, I would argue the Cowboys would probably have to kick a game-winning field goal just to beat a Pee-Wee team full of eight-year old second graders.
I know my take is far fetched and laughable, but the intent is real and Cowboys Nation and critics alike know it’s the truth when it comes to the Cowboys and their play on the field.
And because of their inconsistent play, the Cowboys are nothing more than a pretender at this point and cannot be considered a legit Super Bowl contender until corrections are made.
I can’t believe I feel this way but after watching the uneventful and uninspired play of the Cowboys on Monday night against the lowly New York Giants, I have come to the conclusion this team is truly a pretender because it plays down to its competition and struggles against the elite ones.
It’s the truth.
Against the Saints, Packers, and Jets, Dallas either fell behind early, had self-inflicted wounds, did not play up to its strengths, was out coached or exhibited all of the above. Contenders don’t lose to poor teams like the Jets.
There is no excuse for Dallas to come out flat and play lackluster football for three quarters against the lowly and pathetic New York Giants. I mean absolutely none. Nada. That game should have never been close to begin with. The normally reliable Dak Prescott opened up the game in a dramatic way when he threw an interception to Giants deep inside Dallas’ own territory to Giants safety Antoine Bethea. It was a RPO (run-pass-option) and Dak simply didn’t take the time to read Bethea once he back off from a blitz..
When Dak threw that interception,I knew it was going to be a hard fought game. Trust me I knew it. And so did you, even if your were in denial.
Yes, the mighty Dallas team came back and beat the pathetic Giants off of sheer talent. And the defense finally came to play and saved the offense from its own miscues-like turnovers and untimely penalties.
But raise your hand if you’ve seen Dallas start off slow and play sloppy football against lower competition. It should be thousands of hands raised right now because this is exactly how Dallas played against the winless New York Jets at the time-New York city’s other abysmal team.
This has been Dallas’ theme song all year long. And guess what, Super Bowl contending teams don’t play inconsistent football, especially against inferior competition. If you need any proof, look at the much hated New England Patriots who absolutely destroys inferior competition.
Look man, they own the Pee-Wee teams of the AFC East like their its owner!
When Bill Belichick faces a team like the Jets or Miami Dolphins, ole hoodie beats those teams as if the Patriots are playing in the Super Bowl. You never see the Patriots play lackluster on any given Sunday. And that’s because they’re always a Super Bowl contending and they play like it.
Dallas played its eighth game of the season and yet this team has failed to play a complete game on both sides of the ball. In Dallas’ first three wins of the season, the offense played outstanding but the defense played below average against subpar competition (Giants, Washington Redskins, and Dolphins).
Then during their three game losing streak, Dallas’ offense and defense took turns playing inconsistently.
Against the Saints, Packers, and Jets, Dallas either fell behind early, had self-inflicted wounds, did not play up to its strengths, was out coached or exhibited all of the above. Contenders don’t lose to poorly teams like the Jets.
Throughout Dallas’ first eight games, this team has recorded a three- game winning streak and a three-game losing streak. Between those three game streaks, the winning streak shows you what this team can do when it plays to its potential and then some, and the losing streak exemplifies everything this team is if its not prepared and focused.

I hate to say it but Dallas is more like the team during its three game losing streak because of its coach-Jason Garrett– and the entire coaching staff as a whole. I’m not saying that to be negative but because a team as talented as Dallas is not supposed to endure a three-game losing streak-especially if it does not have a plethora of injuries to key players or does not have a franchise quarterback.
For example, the Pittsburgh Steelers loss franchise quarterback Ben Roethlisberger to a season-ending injury and sit 4-4 with Mason Rudolph as its starting quarterback, and two games back back behind the division leader Baltimore Ravens.
The Steelers could have mailed in their season along time ago or just played lackluster football because of the loss of Big Ben. The Steelers have an excuse, but if it keeps winning, it can capture a wild card spot.
Wow. That’s what you call good coaching by Mike Tomlin and his coaching staff, and the Steelers aren’t supposed to be winning anything.
Dallas doesn’t have any excuses to be sitting at 5-3 with an awful loss to the lowly Jets on its resume. And because of that, Dallas is a pretender until proven otherwise. BOOM!
